A candlelight vigil in memory of slain Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun will be held on Tuesday, January 17th, the city of Lake Elsinore announced.
The community vigil will be at 6: 00 p.m. at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station, where Calhoun had been assigned, at 333 W. Limited Ave.
A Help a Hero fundraising page for Calhoun’s family had raised more than $134,000 by noon Sunday. Calhoun was married with two children and a baby on the way.
Calhoun was gunned down on Friday responding to a domestic violence call in Lakewood Village, an unincorporated area just outside the city. The accused shooter, Jesse Navarro, 42, was shot by a second responding deputy. The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition.
Late Friday, a procession of law enforcement officers escorted Calhoun’s body from Inland Valley Medical Center to the coroner’s office in Perris.
Funeral services are pending.
The shooting came just a couple of weeks after Deputy Isaiah Albert Cordero was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Jurupa Valley on Dec. 29, the first line-of-duty death of a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy in 15 years.
