This year’s Golden Globes was hosted by actor and comedian, Jerrod Carmichael, who cracked a joke about the late singer Whitney Houston, which caught fans’ attention.
In the video, Carmichael talks to the audience and describes the atmosphere for the show.
“We are here live from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, The Beverly Hilton,” Carmichael said.
Some members of the crowd could be heard gasping in the background.
In February 2012, Whitney Houston was found unconscious at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Her biopic, I Want To Dance With Somebody, was released last December. Twitter reacted quickly to Carmichael’s joke.
One said the joke was in poor taste as they used a GIF of Whitney being shocked.
Other users agreed that the joke about Whitney’s death was “too soon” and showed other GIFs of the being disappointed in Carmichael.
One celebrity that was also under fire for insensitive comments was rapper Kanye West who was sued by George Floyd’s family after he said that fentanyl in his system killed him, rather than a knee to the neck.
Recently, Legendary comedian and actor Eddie Murphy made the first Will Smith slap joke at the 2023 Golden Globes. Murphy gave young actors advice in his acceptance speech and ended it with “keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f*cking mouth,” joking about Will Smith’s 2022 Oscars slap, striking comedian Chris Rock.
