Independent specialist re/insurance broker Miller has announced its expansion into the Japanese market, extending its specialist offerings to non-transport insurance lines through its Japanese business Lead Insurance Services Limited (Lead).

Tokinori Kono (pictured above) will join as head of non-marine broking, expanding Miller’s product capabilities in Japan. Previously, Kono served as General Manager at I&T Risk Solutions (now Comos Risk Solutions) for seven years and spent four years at Aon.

His career began at Tokio Marine and he has experience building an international trading company that monitors and manages risks.

This appointment follows the acquisition of Lead, which Miller said is consistent with its long-term plans to expand its business in Japan in scale and product line. Miller took over as lead in 2022 after a 25-year relationship.

Founded in 1994, Lead is a specialist marine broker specializing in hull, war risk and protection and damage insurance.

Ron Whyte, Head of Asia at Miller, noted that Kono’s appointment supports the successful partnership with Lead and promotes growth opportunities in the Japanese market.

“Asia remains a cornerstone of our ambitious international goals and we look forward to making further announcements in due course as we continue to expand our presence in the region.”

Toru Suzuki, president of Lead, was also excited about expanding its offerings in Japan.

“Miller has provided us with a great home to realize our growth ambitions and I look forward to working with Kono-san as we continue to provide the same high-quality advice we are known for in a new market space,” said Suzuki.

Back in April, the re/insurance broker expanded its freight capacity within the APAC region with the addition of Alberto Ferriolo, who brings extensive experience in serving commodity clients in European and Asian markets. His background also includes sales and business development positions at a major Asian natural resources company and a global logistics company.
