Small business employees reveal their biggest concerns

Pie Insurance’s 2024 Workplace Safety Survey highlighted work temperature concerns and mental stress issues as top concerns for workers in small businesses in the United States.
“Our survey highlighted mental health as a silent but ever-present threat to workplace safety,” the Pie Insurance survey article states.
“Individual respondents’ findings to an open-ended question revealed a worrying trend, with many citing ‘mental health’, ‘mental stress’ and ‘anxiety’ as serious workplace injuries and workplace safety nightmares,” it said. “In fact, 13% of small business owners reported that mental stress was the most common workplace injury in their businesses over the last five years – with that number rising to 22% among younger business owners aged 18 to 34.”
The survey found that mental health-related injuries were not limited to a specific industry but were the most affected.
“Interestingly,” the survey report says, “those in less physical industries were actually more likely to say that mental health injuries were the most common injury in their workplace.” From media and arts (19%) and finance (24%) on Research, Technology and IT (36%), small businesses are struggling with the effects of workplace stress, highlighting the urgent need for proactive intervention.”
Meanwhile, 31% of respondents pointed out that employees expressed concern about rising temperatures in the workplace during the hot summer months as it affects their work. Unfortunately, 35% of respondents said they have no concrete plan and do not plan to do anything to address the issue of workplace temperature.
However, it is unforeseen dangers that respondents describe as their “worst nightmare”. Workplace violence and natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes are among the unforeseen dangers that small business owners fear.
Pie Insurance commissioned the British internet-based market research and data analysis company YouGov to conduct the survey. The survey was conducted online-only from February 19 to 27 among 1,034 small and medium-sized businesses based in the United States.
