Snow removal, food distribution continues in San Bernardino Mountains

Snow removal continues in the San Bernardino Mountains Wednesday, March 8, as San Bernardino County announced that 488 miles of county maintained roads had been cleared.

That’s about 95% of roadways for which the county is responsible in the mountain communities.

While another storm is expected to move in to the area later this week, the National Weather Service says, for now, the county is making progress on roadway accessibility for residents.

Tuesday evening Highway 18 between Lucerne Valley and Big Bear had reopened to all vehicles, Caltrans said on Facebook. Most other mountain highways are open to residents and essential workers only. And proof of residency is required.

Caltrans crews from Fawnskin “did some serious heavy lifting” on Highway 18 on Tuesday, the agency said on Twitter. “Crews have now removed over 12 million cubic yards of snow” from state highways in the San Bernardino Mountains.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department teams continued well-checks through the day Tuesday, and connected with mountain residents.

The agency, via Twitter, encourages residents still needing assistance to contact the County’s hotline at 909-387-3911. And for emergency situations, call or text 911.

Food and supply distribution for mountain residents continues in the four communities, Blue Jay, Crestline, Running Springs, and Wrightwood. Each day at 10 a.m. the supplies are available until they run out at the following locations:

Arrowhead Library, 27235 State Highway 189, Blue Jay

Crestline Library, 24105 Lake Gregory Drive, Crestline

Valley of Enchantment Elementary School, 22836 Fir Lane, Crestline

Charles Hoffman Elementary School, 2851 Running Springs Road, Running Springs

Wrightwood Community Center, 1275 Highway 2, Wrightwood
