BEIJING — The US is pushing the idea of wanting to suppress China and said it does not want to separate the two economies, according to a State Department spokesman.
The spokesman was responding to a CNBC request for comment on Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang’s comments on Tuesday. Qin claimed US calls to “erect guard rails” on the relationship meant China should not respond.
Qin also said the US must “put the brakes on” to avoid a conflict with China.
“We have made it clear that we are not trying to contain China or start a new Cold War,” the US State Department spokesman said.
The spokesman referred to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s comments last year that the US would not seek to prevent China from expanding its economy or “advancing the interests of its people.”
“He also said that although China seeks asymmetric decoupling, we do not want to separate China’s economy from ours,” the spokesman said.
