Biden Wins Vermont and Virginia Primary Elections, Starting Expected Sweep

President Biden won the Democratic nominating contests in 15 states on Tuesday, all but ending this year’s primary campaign as he turns his full attention to the general election.

The Associated Press called the victories for Mr. Biden shortly after polls closed in each state.

Mr. Biden faced only token resistance from Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and self-help author Marianne Williamson, and he continued to sweep them aside in Tuesday’s primaries. The only blemish on the night was the caucus in American Samoa, where he lost to a little-known Democrat named Jason Palmer.

Mr Biden’s triumphs in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia allowed him to collect delegates on the busiest day on the party’s presidential calendar .

Despite widespread concern within the party about his ability to unite the coalition that powered his victory in 2020, Mr. Biden has once again emerged as the Democrats’ consensus choice. His State of the Union address on Thursday will serve as an unofficial start to a likely November race against former President Donald J. Trump.

“Today’s results give the American people a clear choice,” Mr. Biden said in a statement on Tuesday evening. “Will we continue to move forward or will we allow Donald Trump to drag us back into the chaos, division and darkness that characterized his time in office?”

The president’s campaign views Tuesday’s contests as a moment when the nation will increasingly focus on the choice between the president and Mr. Trump, his predecessor who also enjoyed a huge delegate advantage over his last Republican challenger, former Gov. Nikki , built by Haley from South Carolina.

Aside from superficial challenges and concerns about the impact of the Gaza war on last week’s Michigan primary, there was little drama surrounding Mr. Biden’s bid for reappointment.

The only voting state on Tuesday that was somewhat puzzling for Mr. Biden was Minnesota, where Muslim Democrats and progressives tried to emulate Michigan’s efforts to persuade voters to vote for “non-binding” in protest at Mr. Biden’s position on Israel. to give away. He easily won the state, although the “unaffiliated” effort received a notable share of support.

North Carolina is the only state that will be a battleground in the general election, which held a primary on Tuesday.

While the Biden campaign didn’t devote as much attention and resources to winning over primary voters on Tuesday as it did in South Carolina, Nevada and Michigan, where elections have already taken place, the state has become a campaign target in November. The Biden team deployed staff there weeks earlier than in other key states such as Georgia.

The states with the most delegate counts for Mr. Biden on Tuesday are Texas and California, although Massachusetts and Virginia are also expected to deliver their entire slates of candidates to Mr. Biden.
