On Friday, crowds gathered in Moscow to attend the funeral of Alexei Navalny. Allies of the late Russian opposition politician said over 1,000 people gathered.
CNBC was unable to independently verify the number.
Remnants of snow clung to the streets of gray Moscow as people lined up outside the church where the memorial service will take place. A heavy police presence is expected as political tensions run high ahead of presidential elections due to take place March 15-17.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday that any unauthorized gatherings in support of Navalny would violate the law, according to a translation by NBC News.
Navalny died last month under unclear circumstances while serving a sentence in an Arctic prison colony. The death certificate reportedly indicated “natural causes.”
Navalny’s family, supporters and Western leaders said Russian President Vladimir Putin was responsible for his rival’s death, but the Kremlin denied any involvement.
