Summer at the Spa — a nearly 200-year-old ritual — started early in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., with the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, run for the first time Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, a revered relic the elite and others mingle, but the horses rule.

Broadway, the city’s central thoroughfare, was a hive of activity. Lines for picnic tables at the racetrack began forming before dawn. A new color – Belmont Green – mixed with the track’s signature red and white trim. Owners, trainers, horse players and the cooler-wearing faithful all welcomed the break from tradition at the 156th running of the race.

Ridden by Luis Saez and trained by Danny Gargan, the 17-1 longshot Dornoch held on against Mindframe and Sierra Leone to secure a stunning victory.
