Good news for political partisans hoping to go to bed early: Barring any unexpected problems, we should know the results of South Carolina’s Republican primary well before midnight.
Polls close at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and the state typically counts quickly. When Democrats held their state primary on February 3, the results were available minutes after the polls closed. The Associated Press was able to decide the race for President Biden within 30 minutes.
Of course, no one on the Republican side is expected to achieve the overwhelming 96 percent that Mr. Biden won. But it will also likely be an early night given the more competitive race between former President Donald J. Trump and Nikki Haley.
At around 10:45 p.m. on February 3, less than four hours after the polls closed, almost all ballots had been counted.
