South Dakota’s Republican governor, Kristi Noem, suggested that President Joe Biden’s dog, Commander, should suffer the same fate as her own 14-month-old dog, Cricket, whom she shot because of his aggressive behavior, as she did in her upcoming campaign Memoirs revealed.
“Joe Biden’s dog attacked 24 Secret Service employees. So how many people are enough to be attacked and dangerously injured before you decide to get a dog?” Noem said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “This is the issue for which the president should be held accountable.”
The Biden administration announced in October that Commander had been moved from the White House grounds following multiple incidents in which he bit or otherwise attacked U.S. Secret Service agents.
Noem’s Sunday comments come as she faces intense backlash from both Democrats and Republicans for including anecdotes in her upcoming memoir about the decision to personally kill various family farm animals, including cricket and an unnamed goat.
As she fights to become Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, some, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, have claimed that the controversial memoir excerpts have hurt her chances.
In the days since Noem’s memoir anecdotes were released, the South Dakota governor has done damage control to save her candidacy for vice president.
On Sunday, Noem stepped up her defense to confront Cricket, claiming the dog attacked her children and that the backlash she received was politically motivated.
“This is a story that my political opponents have been trying to exploit against me for years,” Noem said. “They do to me every day what they do to Donald Trump.”
