Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks at the Stanford Business, Government and Society Forum on Wednesday. He will deliver prepared remarks followed by a question-and-answer session with a moderator.

Latest: Fed Chairman Powell emphasizes that more evidence that inflation is easing is needed before cutting interest rates

The appearance follows the Fed’s meeting last month in which it held interest rates steady and Powell suggested the central bank would likely cut interest rates later this year. But he also said the timing was not certain and policymakers needed more evidence that inflation was moving toward the Fed’s 2 percent target.

Since then, other officials have echoed those comments. They expect an unspecified number of rate cuts, but the timing is uncertain. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said Wednesday he thinks there could be just one rate cut this year, although his colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee have suggested three.

Markets expect the Fed to begin easing in June or July and make a total of three rate cuts by the end of 2024.
