According to a new Expedia report, more than three in five workers worldwide feel like they’re deprived of vacation or don’t take enough vacation.

The report, which surveyed more than 11,500 respondents in 11 markets, found that 62% feel they have to forego vacations.

According to the report, this is felt most often by employees from European countries, particularly Germany (84%) and France (69%).

Expedia noted that many French workers still feel like they have to forgo vacation, despite having the most days off among the markets included in the report.

“This is because the vast majority of French workers believe that time off is a fundamental right and that it is crucial for overall health and well-being,” the report said. “The distinctly French emphasis on the fundamental right to rest is adopted everywhere.”

According to the report, Japan had the lowest number of workers who felt they had to forego vacation. Only 53% felt like they didn’t take enough vacation. The low numbers are despite the low take-up of vacation days there, as employees only use up to 12 days of their granted vacation days.

According to the report, Japanese workers use their holidays and office and school closures to take frequent and short breaks that allow them to take a break from everyday life without using up their paid time off (PTO).

Another country where workers do not use all of their PTO is the United States, where workers only use their PTO on 11 days. As a result, 65% of employees there say their vacation is being revoked, an 11-year high for Americans.

“Obviously, there’s a lot for the U.S. to borrow, whether it’s spreading out your PTO throughout the year or prioritizing rest time on your next vacation,” said Melanie Fish, head of brand communications for Expedia Group, in a statement.

According to the report, Hong Kong is the only place where respondents have used up all their vacation days and more.

With more than half of them feeling like they have run out of vacation time (57%), the report found that 15% of workers there plan to take more vacation time than they have available, on average.
